Guns N Roses return with this pop-metal extravaganza

Considering that this album cost Axl Rose over $13 million and took 15 years to record, expectations are high to say the least – and the results certainly don’t disappoint. Chinese Democracy is an epic album, and serves as an instant reminder as to what a great band they are. With collaborations from the likes of Buckethead, Brain May and guitar legends galore, the album has been worth the wait – and then some. There’s an odd combination of piano ballads and hip hop beats that shouldn’t work, but rather than feeling overdone, the result is a wonderfully eclectic mix that works superbly. Axl Rose also proves he’s not averse to trying something new, layering an R&B style loop with lonesome vocals on the track Better. As ever, Axl’s astounding vocals are at the centre of what makes this album as special as it is. Chinese Democracy is a pop-metal extravaganza - if you only buy one album before 2009, make this it.
